Who Should Be A Doctor?

Sat, Jul 18 (3:00pm - 4:30pm)

Description

Did you know that half of all doctors wouldn’t recommend it for their children?

What does it mean to be a doctor? What type of person becomes a good doctor? How do you know if medicine is the right career for you?

Not only is personal and career insight examined as part of the medical admissions interview, but it is this knowledge that allows you to push through the competitive medical entry programme and stay motivated.

Let’s take an honest look at the career of medicine.

In this webinar, we will discuss:

  • What does a career in medicine really involve?
  • What does the medical pathway look like?
  • What are the positives and gritty negatives you should expect?
  • What kinds of personalities, values and motivations make a successful doctor?
  • What kinds of people will find medicine unfulfilling?

We will break down the distinctive personality types that thrive in medicine and the reasons some people choose medicine and eventually regret it!

Our Speakers

Dr Elizabeth Berryman

After starting her career as a Registered Nurse in community Maori Health, Liz studied Medicine at Otago University, becoming a fully qualified Medical Doctor, specialising in psychiatry. During her time working in medicine, Liz realised she wanted to be more involved in preventative mental health, and today is the Founder and director of chnnl – a wholly digital platform providing insights, information and data on employee mental health and wellbeing.

Dr Sanjeev Krishna

Sanjeev trained at the University of Auckland medical school. He is passionate about teaching and balancing a clinical job with outside interests. After doing 2 years as a junior doctor he spent time doing orthopaedic surgery, emergency medicine and community medicine. With his colleagues, they created the world’s first measles chatbot, Mitara, and more recently developed a chatbot for COVID-19 called Amio. He currently juggles research, teaching, creating chatbots and working as a clinician while still trying to find time to play basketball, spend time with his family and watch plenty of Netflix.

Dr Justin Sung

Justin is an Auckland medical graduate and founder of JTT. He worked as a junior doctor for 2 years and now works in the education space, partnering with schools, DHB’s and other organisations to deliver medical career planning and youth development services around the country. He has individually guided more students into medical pathways than anyone else in New Zealand.

By the end of this webinar, you will know if medicine is a career that might be right for you.

Invite your family or friends and join us as we discuss the high’s and low’s of one of the most opaque careers out there.
